Should your business sponsor unknown people?

Everyone immediately thinks about some fancy celebrity when contemplating a sponsorship deal. I want to turn this idea on its head and suggest that business can get a lot more for their investment if they sponsor the average citizen who is doing it a little tough at the moment.
